I grew up in urban Dublin, Ireland and my childhood holidays were spent on my mother’s farm. This early contrast strongly influenced the blend of elements in my work - the biomorphic forms, the warm earthy palette, and the geometric constructions.

At 23 I left Dublin for New York, starting 20 years of travel through urban and rural areas in Mexico, Senegal, London, Brussels and Beirut. My earliest paintings were made on interior walls in Merida, Mexico, strongly influenced by the mural tradition. I travelled with my saxophone, embracing varied musical traditions while also documenting my experiences photographically. I became familiar with a range of chromatic styles, architectural forms, dances and costumes, enriching my aesthetic. These encounters were subtle but definite influences on my painterly world.

My recent Geo-metric series is inspired by compositional arrangements: the rhythmic repetition of urban patterns, the dialogue of colours, and what I feel is a profound connection between musical and visual forms, especially minimalism with its emphasis on repetition and minor variations. While I start from a preconceived plan, improvisation is integral to the process. In the gallery I include works from earlier series- Of Fruitfulness and Chalk Play.

For me painting is turning away from the perceived world and travelling inward. To quote the painter Agnes Martin “Beauty is not in the eye, it is in the mind”. Painting is both a meditative process and self expression.I feel that my best paintings connect to my inner self.
